Starting from the 2015-2016 academic year, the University of Amsterdam will be the first university in the Netherlands to offer a specialisation, a series of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in a specific field, on Coursera. The specialisation is on methodologies and techniques in social sciences, consisting of four MOOCs and a final research project.

MOOC Solid Science

In the first UvA specialisation, named 'Become a Social Scientist: Methods and Statistics', participants can follow four different courses: Solid Science: Research Methods, Qualitative Research Methods, Descriptive Statistics and Inferential Statistics. Participants are then assessed through a research project in which they apply what they have learned. Following the successful completion of the components of the specialisation, they receive a certificate of participation.

'Become a Social Scientist: Methods and Statistics' starts in September 2015 on Coursera, the international online education platform. The start dates for the various courses are:

  • 31 August 2015 - Solid Science: Research Methods
  • 26 October 2015 - Qualitative Research Methods
  • 4 January 2016 - Descriptive Statistics
  • 29 February 2016 - Inferential Statistics
  • 25 April 2016 - Social Science Final Research Project

The first course of the specialisation, focusing on research methodologies, previously ran as a pilot in September of this year.
