R.G. Fukkink (1969) has been appointed Professor by Special Appointment of Childcare and Education Services for Young Children in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The special chair was designated on behalf of Stichting Ondersteuning leerstoel kinderopvang en educatieve voorzieningen voor het jonge kind (Foundation for the Support of Early Childhood Care and Education).
Ruben Fukkink’s research area is childcare, ranging from daycare to out-of-school care, and from pre-school to early primary education. His work focuses on measuring and improving the educational quality and ongoing professionalisation of childcare services. Fukkink specializes in particular on the professional qualifications and training of teaching staff. Other recent and ongoing research themes of his include men in childcare, the physical spaces of childcare centres, the implementation of innovative curricula, and parenting support.
Fukkink’s expertise is located at the interface of science and practice, in line with the objectives of the chair. He has extensive experience in disseminating the outcomes of scientific research within the childcare sector and translating these into recommendations and concrete methodologies for practitioners. Fukkink is also a member of various committees and advisory bodies within the childcare sector.
Fukkink has been a lecturer in Child Development and Education at the UvA since 2009. Prior to this he was a senior researcher at the SCO-Kohnstamm Institute. Since 2011 he has been a project leader at the Netherlands Consortium for Childcare Research (NCKO), where he was involved in the creation of the NCKO’s day care quality monitor. Fukkink also contributed to the education framework for out-of-school care. His work has appeared in national and international scientific journals including Early Childhood Research Quarterly, Educational Psychology Review and Teaching and Teacher Education.
